What groups are used for
Groups let you target specific subsets of guests with relevant messages. Common examples:- Brideside / Groomside — for messages relevant to each family
- VIPs — for priority communication
- Family — for close family members across both sides
- College Friends — for a specific social circle
- Dubai Guests — for guests traveling from a specific city
- Hotel Guests — for guests staying at the wedding hotel
- Sangeet Guests — for guests invited to a specific ceremony
- Test — for testing announcements before sending to everyone
Creating a group manually
1
Open Guests
Open the wedding in the app and go to Guests.
2
Tap Create Group
Tap Create Group above your guest list. You can also tap Manage Group → Create Group.
3
Name the group
Enter a descriptive name (e.g., “Bride’s Family” or “Reception Only”).
4
Save and add guests
Tap Create Group. The group is created. You can add guests to it immediately or later from the guest list.
Group name rules
- Group names are saved in lowercase, so “Family” and “family” are the same name.
- Two groups in the same wedding can’t have the same name. If you try, you’ll see “Group with this name already exists” (when creating) or “A group with this name already exists” (when renaming). Pick a different name, or add guests to the existing group instead.
- If creating a group fails for another reason, you’ll see “Couldn’t create group. Please try again.”
The All Guests group
All Guests is a built-in group that always contains every guest in your wedding. It isn’t listed in Manage Group, and it can’t be renamed, merged, or deleted. While you’re viewing All Guests you can copy guests into other groups or delete guests, but you can’t move them out of it or remove them from it — every guest is always in All Guests.Auto-created groups from Excel import
When you import an Excel file, Weddingkart suggests groups from your sheet names and from the values in your other columns, and creates the ones you select. A guest on a “Brideside” sheet is added to the “brideside” group, and a guest with “Yes” in a “Brideside” column is added to the “brideside=yes” group. This means you can set up all your groups before you even open the app — just structure your Excel file the way you want your groups to look. See Excel Import for details on file formatting.Managing group membership
You can add or remove guests from groups at any time:- Add a guest to a group — open the guest’s profile and choose groups in Select Group, or open the group, tap Add Guest, and use Add Existing Guests to add guests who are already in another group
- Move a guest — moves the guest from one group to another (removes them from the original)
- Copy a guest — adds the guest to a new group without removing them from the current one
- Remove a guest from a group — removes the guest from the group only; the guest record is not deleted
- A guest can be in any number of groups. Being in “Brideside” and “VIPs” at the same time is fine.
- Groups made from an Excel column hold one value per guest. If you copy or move a guest into
mehendi=no, they’re taken out ofmehendi=yes(and any othermehendi=…group) automatically, so they can’t be in two answers for the same column. - Removing isn’t deleting. Remove from group asks “Are you sure you want to remove this guest from the group?”; deleting asks “Are you sure you want to permanently delete this guest?” and removes them from the whole wedding.
Other group operations
Tap Manage Group on the Guests screen to see all your groups. Each group’s menu has these options, and you can also select several groups at once to merge or delete them together. Rename — you can rename any group at any time without affecting its members or any past announcements. Duplicate — creates a copy of a group with the same guests, under a new name. Merge into… — choose one or more groups and a group to merge them into. All members are combined into the group you merge into, and the other groups are removed. You can optionally give the final group a new name in Final group name (optional). A guest who was in several of the merged groups appears only once in the final group. If you’ve selected every group, you’ll see “No other groups available as a merge target. Deselect at least one group to keep it.” Delete — deleting a group removes the group only. The guests in it are not deleted. Deleting one group asks “Are you sure you want to delete the group ?” — tap Yes, delete. Deleting several at once tells you how many guests will be ungrouped: “This will ungroup N guests. The guests themselves will not be deleted. This cannot be undone.” When it’s done you’ll see ”🎉 Deleted N groups”. Group names in the Rename, Duplicate, and Merge into… boxes follow the same name rules — a name already used by another group is refused. To select several groups, tap the select icon in Manage Group, tick the groups (or Select all), then tap Delete or Merge into… at the bottom.Sending to multiple groups
When you send an announcement to more than one group, each guest receives the message only once — even if they belong to multiple groups. Weddingkart takes the union of all selected groups and deduplicates the recipients automatically. There are no duplicate messages. A guest who belongs to both “Brideside” and “VIPs” receives the announcement once when you select both groups.
Tips for managing groups
Common questions
Are these WhatsApp groups?
Are these WhatsApp groups?
No. Groups are only for organizing your list inside Weddingkart. Guests never see them, and no WhatsApp group is created.
If I delete a group, are the guests deleted?
If I delete a group, are the guests deleted?
No. Only the group is removed. The guests stay in your wedding and in any other groups they’re in.
Can the same guest be in two groups?
Can the same guest be in two groups?
Yes, in as many as you like. When you send to several of their groups at once, they still get the message only once.
Why can't I delete or rename All Guests?
Why can't I delete or rename All Guests?
All Guests is built in and always contains everyone, so it can’t be renamed, merged, or deleted. Create your own groups for anything more specific.
Why can't I remove a guest while viewing All Guests?
Why can't I remove a guest while viewing All Guests?
Every guest is always in All Guests. Open the specific group you want to remove them from, or use delete to remove them from the wedding.
I get "Group with this name already exists". What now?
I get "Group with this name already exists". What now?
A group with that name is already in your wedding — names are saved in lowercase, so “Family” and “family” clash. Use the existing group or choose another name.
I copied a guest into mehendi=no and they disappeared from mehendi=yes. Is that a bug?
I copied a guest into mehendi=no and they disappeared from mehendi=yes. Is that a bug?
No. Groups made from an Excel column hold one answer per guest, so adding them to one value removes them from the others in that column.
Does re-importing my Excel remove guests from groups?
Does re-importing my Excel remove guests from groups?
No, a re-import only adds guests to groups. The exception is column groups: a guest’s new value for a column (for example, Mehendi changed from Yes to No) replaces the old one. See Excel Import.
Does renaming a group affect past messages?
Does renaming a group affect past messages?
No. Renaming keeps the same members and doesn’t change announcements you’ve already sent.
