# Guest Groups

> Organize guests into groups for targeted announcements

Groups are named segments of your guest list. When you send an announcement, you select one or more groups as the recipients — Weddingkart delivers the message to every guest in those groups.

Groups are internal to Weddingkart. They are not WhatsApp groups and do not appear anywhere in your guests' WhatsApp app.

## What groups are used for

Groups let you target specific subsets of guests with relevant messages. Common examples:

* **Brideside / Groomside** — for messages relevant to each family
* **VIPs** — for priority communication
* **Family** — for close family members across both sides
* **College Friends** — for a specific social circle
* **Dubai Guests** — for guests traveling from a specific city
* **Hotel Guests** — for guests staying at the wedding hotel
* **Sangeet Guests** — for guests invited to a specific ceremony
* **Test** — for testing announcements before sending to everyone

## Creating a group manually

<Steps>
  <Step title="Navigate to Groups">
    Open the wedding in the app and go to **Guests** → **Groups**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap Add Group">
    Tap the **+** button or **Create Group**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the group">
    Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Bride's Family" or "Reception Only").
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save and add guests">
    Tap **Save**. The group is created. You can add guests to it immediately or later from the guest list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Auto-created groups from Excel import

When you import an Excel file with Yes/No columns, Weddingkart creates a group for each column automatically. A guest with "Yes" in the "Brideside" column is added to the "Brideside" group on import.

This means you can set up all your groups before you even open the app — just structure your Excel file the way you want your groups to look.

See [Excel Import](/guests/excel-import) for details on file formatting.

## Managing group membership

You can add or remove guests from groups at any time:

* **Add a guest to a group** — open the guest's profile and select the group, or open the group and add guests to it
* **Move a guest** — moves the guest from one group to another (removes them from the original)
* **Copy a guest** — adds the guest to a new group without removing them from the current one
* **Remove a guest from a group** — removes the guest from the group only; the guest record is not deleted

## Other group operations

**Rename** — you can rename any group at any time without affecting its members or any past announcements.

**Merge** — select two or more groups and merge them into one. All members from the original groups are combined into the new group, and the original groups are removed.

**Delete** — deleting a group removes the group only. The guests in it are not deleted.

## Sending to multiple groups

When you send an announcement to more than one group, each guest receives the message only once — even if they belong to multiple groups. Weddingkart takes the union of all selected groups and deduplicates the recipients automatically.

<Note>
  There are no duplicate messages. A guest who belongs to both "Brideside" and "VIPs" receives the announcement once when you select both groups.
</Note>

## Tips for managing groups

<Tip>
  Create a "Test" group with 2-3 of your own phone numbers. Send every announcement to the Test group first to verify the message looks correct before sending to all guests.
</Tip>

<Tip>
  Create event-specific groups for each ceremony — "Sangeet Guests", "Haldi Guests", "Baraat Guests" — so you can send ceremony-specific messages without manually filtering your list every time.
</Tip>

<Tip>
  Keep the total number of groups under 10. More groups than that becomes difficult to manage and easy to mis-select when composing announcements.
